Task 2: Field Study

LIST

INSTRUCTION

Figure 1 Module Instruction

In this task, we needed to choose one idea from Task 1 to continue working on for the field study.

FIELD STUDY

After receiving feedback and suggestions from Mr. Fitri, our group started discussing our ideas and decided to proceed with Idea 1 for the field study. We then began searching for suitable locations for the field study, and Megan and Peiying were responsible for this part. (Field Study Locations

Then our group started our field study. We used public transport to travel around Kuala Lumpur while conducting our research. We started the study at Pasar Seni LRT Station, then went to Muzium Negara MRT Station, followed by KL Sentral, and then KLCC LRT Station. Lastly, we ended our field study at Ampang Park LRT Station.

After finishing the field study, we divided the tasks for preparing the PPT.

  • Research Objective & Canva Template – Megan

  • Data Collection Method (Observational, Survey, Internet Research) – Megan

  • Observational – Pei Ying

  • Survey Data – Irene, Mei

  • Internet Research – Angel

  • Analysis of 3 Route Design Ideas – Aida

  • Selected Design – Aida

Our group also created a Google Form to collect survey data, and here are the results.

I took part in the analysis of the three route designs and selected design. During the field study, we explored several locations and routes. From our exploration, we selected three routes for further analysis: LRT Pasar Seni to Central MarketLRT KLCC to KLCC Convention Centre, and LRT Ampang Park to Intermark Mall.

The three maps below show the routes we explored.
Blue line – Cool Path
Orange line – Hot Path

Figure 2.1 LRT Pasar Seni to Central Market Map

From Pasar Seni LRT Station to Central Market, there are two route options that can be categorized as a Cool Path and a Hot Path.

Cool Path
Benefits:
The cool path provides a more comfortable walking experience as most parts of the route are shaded. It helps pedestrians avoid direct sunlight and reduces heat exposure, making the journey more pleasant.

Target Users:

  • Elderly people

  • Families with children

  • Tourists

  • Pedestrians who prefer a more comfortable and shaded walking environment

Characteristics:
The route mainly passes through shaded walkways and areas with building coverage, creating a cooler and more protected environment. It focuses on comfort and protection from the weather.

Hot Path
Benefits:
The hot path offers a more direct and faster route to the destination. Pedestrians can reach Central Market in a shorter time.

Target Users:

  • Office workers

  • Daily commuters

  • Pedestrians who prioritize speed and efficiency

Characteristics:
The route is mostly located in open outdoor spaces with less shade. Although it exposes pedestrians to sunlight and heat, it provides a more straightforward and time-efficient connection.

Figure 2.2 LRT KLCC to KLCC Convention Centre Map

From KLCC LRT Station to KLCC Convention Centre, there are two route options that can be categorized as a Cool Path and a Hot Path.

Cool Path
Benefits:
The cool path offers a highly comfortable walking experience as the entire route is located indoors. Pedestrians can completely avoid direct sunlight and heat, making the journey cooler and more pleasant.

Target Users:

  • Tourists visiting the KLCC area

  • Families with children

  • Elderly pedestrians

  • People who prefer a comfortable indoor environment

Characteristics:
The route is fully connected through indoor spaces such as shopping mall corridors and a link bridge, providing a cool and protected environment with shelter from weather conditions.

Hot Path
Benefits:
The hot path provides a shorter and more direct route to the destination. Pedestrians can reach the KLCC Convention Centre faster.

Target Users:

  • Office workers in the KLCC area

  • Daily commuters

  • Pedestrians who prioritize speed and efficiency

Characteristics:
The route begins inside the shopping mall before continuing outdoors toward the park. Pedestrians will transition from an indoor environment to an open outdoor space, where they may be exposed to sunlight and heat.

Figure 2.3 LRT Ampang Park to Intermark Mall Map

From Ampang Park LRT Station to Intermark Mall, there are two route options that can be categorized as a Cool Path and a Hot Path.

Cool Path
Benefits:
The cool path provides a more comfortable walking experience as most parts of the route are shaded or covered. It helps pedestrians avoid direct sunlight and reduces heat exposure during the walk. Pedestrians can also use escalators to reach the pedestrian bridge, making the journey smoother and more effortless.

Target Users:

  • Office workers in the surrounding buildings

  • Elderly pedestrians

  • Visitors who prefer a cooler and more comfortable route

  • Pedestrians who are not in a hurry

Characteristics:
The route mainly follows shaded sidewalks and areas near buildings, providing more protection from the sun. Escalators are used to access the pedestrian bridge, which adds to the comfort and convenience. The walking environment is calmer and more comfortable.

Hot Path
Benefits:
The hot path offers a shorter and more direct route to Intermark Mall, allowing pedestrians to reach the destination more quickly. While it is slightly more exposed to outdoor conditions, the path provides a faster connection.

Target Users:

  • Office workers during busy hours

  • Daily commuters

  • Pedestrians who prioritize speed and convenience

Characteristics:
The route mainly passes through open outdoor spaces with less shade. Pedestrians need to use stairs to reach the pedestrian bridge, which adds some physical effort. Although exposed to sunlight and heat, the path provides a more straightforward and time-efficient connection.

Selected Design

Figure 2.4 Selected Design Wayfinding

A small information panel is installed at Pasar Seni LRT Station to guide pedestrians. The panel displays four colored routes, each representing a different direction: Orange Line – Hot Path (faster route, less shaded), Blue Line – Cool Path (shaded, more comfortable walking), Yellow Line – Back to Station, and Green Line – Way to Bus Stop. The ground directional lines are made of Preformed Thermoplastic material, suitable for concrete or treated surfaces. This material is durable, weather-resistant, and appropriate for outdoor environments. Its bright, high-visibility colors make the routes easy to identify, while the anti-slip surface improves pedestrian safety. The material is long-lasting, requires minimal maintenance, and can be installed directly on existing pavements. Furthermore, this wayfinding system can be expanded to other areas, forming a unified, low-maintenance navigation network that enhances both convenience and safety for pedestrians in public spaces.

SUBMISSION

FEEDBACK

Week 4
We can either proceed with Idea 1 or Idea 3, or we can continue with both ideas at the same time. For Idea 1, we mentioned the climate issue, so we need to make sure that the problems and issues are clearly addressed in the final outcome. Mr. Fitri also suggested focusing more on Idea 3, which is to study how murals are implemented around Kuala Lumpur and other states.

REFLECTION

After receiving feedback from Mr. Fitri, our group was asked to choose either Idea 1 or 3 for the field study. We decided to work on Idea 1. After some initial research, we went to the KL area to conduct the field study. We visited several locations, and although I felt tired at times, the experience was extremely enjoyable. It gave me the opportunity to explore places I had never been to before, which felt refreshing and exciting.Working together as a team to complete the field study was challenging, but it also gave me a strong sense of achievement. Measuring the routes step by step made me feel like we were slowly bringing our ideas to life. I realized that this task really helped me develop my thinking and allowed me to actively engage with the environment, which taught me a lot. Moreover, seeing everyone participate and contribute strengthened our group dynamic. We were able to better understand each other, communicate more effectively, and build a sense of trust, which made us stronger and more cohesive as a team. Overall, this field study was not only a valuable learning experience but also a reminder of how collaboration and hands-on exploration can deepen understanding and creativity.
